Since I was a kid I've always loved Doom. I love the guns, the demons, and the chaos. The first two will always be my favorite, but I still loved the 3rd installment when I got it for the original XBOX. Now let's get one thing straight before I begin. Doom 3 is easily the most repetitive and pointless shooter I have ever played, with almost ZERO storyline (though the previous titles didn't offer much of a story either), with all of the environments pretty much looking the same, and the same monsters appearing out of nowhere constantly in a cramped environment. At first I thought about kicking myself in the face for having wasted my money on such a repetive and seemingly pointless game, but within a couple of hours, I was hooked.
Even though the environments all look the same, and the monsters attack the same way throughout the entire game, and the little bit of story that does exist is pretty easy to ignore and forget, something about the game had me hooked until the very end. I had to force myself to put the control down, as I wanted to continue my adventure through the mars base, blasting through hordes of random monsters and make my way to Hell, and continue to do the same thing. The game is repetitive and pointless, but it sure is fun.
Doom 3 BFG Edition is the perfect package for those who love doom. Not only does it come with an graphically improved version of Doom 3 and it's expansion pack, now being compatible with HD screens, but it also comes with an extra, short but sweet, campaign, and the original Doom 1 and 2. Being a hardcore Doom fan since the day the first one came out for the PC, this is like early Christmas for me.
The graphics still hold up surprisingly well with other games that are out these days, and they look great on my HD tv. The controls are smooth as butter, and I like the fact that I don't have to pull out my flashlight in place of my gun, or have it on my gun. To toggle the flashlight, you simply hit the left trigger, and that's that.
Besides the updated graphics and sound, not much has changed. People complain about the fact that there is no coop campaign multiplayer, and that's understandable, but I never really liked to play shooter campaigns with a friend. I like to play a campaign my way, alone. Simple as that. I play Borderlands 1 and 2 single player and I enjoy them just fine. The one time I did allow a few people into my game, it was only a few short minutes before I booted all of them because they all just ran around doing what they wanted to do. Nope. Not for me. I like to be in control of my gaming experience when it comes to a campaign, so the lack of coop campaign bothers me not one bit for this title.
All in all, this is the whole package for Doom fans (literally). If you love Doom, you will appreciate the amount of content and excellent remastering of Doom 3 and it's expansion, as well as the extra campaign. If you are new to the series, you may still enjoy it if you can get over the fact that NO, it's not Call of Duty (CAMPERS of Duty is more like it) or Halo (one of the most boring and over-rated shooters of all time in my opinion). It's DOOM. Like it or love it. I love it, so I give it five stars. Mega amount of content, highly replayable, and plently of Demons to shoot. Highly recommended!
Doom (aka Doom '95)
-This is the one that started it all, the graphics, music, and sound effects are JUST how I remember them, 2-4 player co-op is a great addition for current-gen consoles and the controls are very well done for the layout of the Xbox controller.
Doom II
-Much of the same as Doom as far as the graphics, sound, and music, another flawless port just like I remember it.
Doom 3
-This is why I really bought this game. When Doom 3 came out originally in the Summer of 2004, I didn't have a PC powerful enough to run it at the level the developers intended, I still played it anyways though. This looks like a whole new game, the shadows are crisp, the lighting has been completely revamped, and some of the clear models (glasses, windows...) look to be updated as well. I should also mention that this game runs at a consistent 60 FPS thanks to the id Tech 6 Engine (also used to develop Rage). The controls have been remapped for the Xbox controller, and the flashlight can also be left on while you have a gun drawn (something that was absent in the original release). It's difficult to break the habit of pressing the left trigger to aim down the sights, as this game never had that. The game play is classic id-FPS, fast, fluid, and intense.
Overall this game is hard to pass up for the price. I would have easily paid $40 for just Doom 3, but the fact that you also get amazing ports of Doom & Doom II make this a deal to anyone who enjoys a good FPS.
