As mentioned above, Zeus got on Kratos's bad side, and if the deaths of approximately 10 bajillion people, centaurs, gods, or what have you are any indication, it's not good to get on Kratos's bad side. The story is a bit uneventful for the first six hours or so of the game. You'll wander around Olympus, and Hades, meeting various mythological figures, and usually end up savagely murdering them. Run-ins with Haephestus (voiced by Rip Torn), and Hercules rank among the most memorable.
The cat and mouse hunt for Zeus is enough to hold your attention, but it isn't until the final act when God of War III truly shines. While I wouldn't dare give anything away, just know that it's truly memorable stuff, and you'll end up seeing Kratos as much more than the savage brute he seems to be throughout the whole series.
The game's first hour, depicting the initial assault on Mount Olympus, is unforgettable. The knob doesn't stay at 11 for very long, however, as you'll soon be thrust back into the usual God of War formula: combat, puzzles, exploration, platforming. But, as per usual, all this stuff is awesome.
Combat is pretty much perfect at this point. This remain pretty much the same, you'll get tons of moves, weapons, and magical powers which you can use to beat on your enemies until you can horribly dismember them through a quick-time event.
Anyone who's played the previous games will know pretty much exactly what to expect, but there have been subtle refinements. Kratos has a new grapple move that pulls enemies toward him, which is particularly helpful for keeping up a combo. Most importantly though, and a vast improvement on something the God of War games have always struggled with in the past, all the weapons feel useful. Kratos starts off with his trusty Blades of Exile, and he'll acquire three more during his journey. All the weapons feel useful, they each have their own magical attack bound to them, and you can come very close to fully upgrading all of them, so needless to say, the Blades of Chaos (now dubbed Blades of Exile) might not be the go-to armament.
Puzzles have been vastly simplified, and I imagine some may like that, and some might not. Unlike the constant, seamlessly integrated environmental puzzles of the second God of War, God of War III's puzzle rooms are very deliberate, and are presented as tests from the gods. The thing is, most of these puzzles can be completed quite easily. So, for those who just want to get back to chopping up bad guys, this is a welcome change, for those looking for the puzzle integration of God of War II, you'll probably be disappointed.
Disappointingly, the constant barrage of set-piece moments that we're used to seeing in a God of War game is absent. The first hour of gameplay is pretty jaw-dropping, and there's a particular boss fight around the middle of the game that will blow you away, but other than that, God of War III is surprisingly low-key.
God of War III's production values are some of the best the PS3 has ever seen. Models, environments, and effects are all top-notch, and the cutscenes rarely leave the in-game engine. The sound department is equally amazing. Stars like Rip Torn, and Malcolm McDowel are among an awesome voice cast, and the booming orchestral score is great.
God of War III will take about eight hours to complete, but as it's paced pretty much perfectly, it shouldn't be viewed as much of a problem. Besides, the game gives you reasons for further play-throughs (beyond the fact that it's awesome) with Godly Possessions (items hidden throughout the game), and various other unlocks. On top of that you have the Combat Arena, Challenge of the Gods, and a ridiculous amount of making-of videos which are sure to occupy your time. While God of War III may not be as lengthy as it's predecessor, it has a lot more replay value than any other game in the series.
God of War III is an excellent game. With near-perfected combat, truly jaw-dropping moments, amazing productions values, and great replay value, this is a worthy conclusion to the series, marred only by the scarcity of the aforementioned jaw-dropping set-pieces, and some underwhelming puzzles. Still, seeing Kratos's vengeance through to the end is one hell of a ride, and the story truly becomes something special during the last few hours of gameplay. Time to go god hunting
GAMEPLAY
Very little has changed in the formula of God of War and that is a good thing for fans of the series. If you are familiar with God of War I and II then you will feel right at home with the controls. The buttons are mapped to be very simple to use, with the Trigger buttons (L1 L2 R1 R2) acting as block, alternative weapon, action and Magic ability. God of War handles like an action game with platforming segments. Often you end up in an area that contains bad guys based in Greek lore (Bulls, Satyr, sirens, centaur generals, cyclops, etc). Dispatch the enemies often leads to either a simple puzzle or platform segment. Combat is fluid and rewards skill over random button mashing. Time that block perfectly you can counter by deflecting the energy back at an enemy. This works great when a Medusa has you in their gaze; just reflect their gaze back at them and the entire room gets turned to stone!
The beauty of the game is how the gameplay flows fluidly from one area to the next and keeps it feeling fresh. Like God of War I and II, as you fight and platform through the 6+ hr campaign you actually end up revisiting places over and over yet it feels fresh and new. Bosses are abundant in this installment, as with previous. Not only are you taking down the Greek Gods one by one, but also famous and familiar figures from Greek Mythology. This game does not hold back the violence one bit, and the ways Kratos dispatches of Bosses and large mobs is gruesome. But this is Kratos after-all so no need to be neat and tidy about it.
GRAPHICS
This is where God of War III shines yet also can disappoint. The opening segment will have your jaw drop at the incredible amount of detail and view this game can pull off with a solid frame rate. Looking at the Titans in the background, the distant horizon and how the camera pans about gives EPIC a new meaning. The first 30 minutes of gameplay will just blow your mind. That's the problem here with the graphics. They start off at a PEAK. After this amazing epic battle and beautiful camera shots, sense of scale and devastation, the game puts you indoors for a while. The graphics still look really good but nothing tops that opening 30 minutes. The good thing is, with very epic boss fight the sense of scale and sheer graphical beauty returns.
In short.. this game looks amazing when you give it an epic viewpoint plus mix in battles with background happenings (like huge Titan's climbing Olympus while being attacked), but once you return to normal gameplay traversing the inner workings of Olympus things look fairly standard for a PS3 game.
SOUND/STORY
In typical fashion God of War spares no expense. The sound track is spot on and the voice acting is top quality. A lot of effort went into this game and it has that nice polish about it. From simple sound effects to the cinematic acting everything flows nicely together. Story wise, the game doesn't disappoint. Like most God of War titles, the storyline is simple. Kratos wants Zeus dead and he will stop at nothing to ensure that happens. Simple and to the point, which works beautifully here. Get in Kratos' way... you will pay.
REPLAY/LENGTH
The game clocked in at around 6 - 7 hours for me. Not overly long, but not short either. God of War III does not overdo its welcome like the previous titles. They were perfectly paced for what the storyline desired. As for Replay value; once you beat the game you unlock the Challenges. Beat all 10 challenges you unlock the combat arena. You also will unlock a costume for Kratos that lets him do 4x normal damage but also take 4x normal damage(makes for a good challenge). Throw in 4 total difficulty modes, and various collectable items of the gods(which give perks on additional playthroughs) you have some replay here. Not much will change other than the game getting harder or easier but like past God of War games, I can find myself easily picking it up quite a few times to play.
OVERALL ... 93% (9.3) A
God of War III is a must have for any fan of the original two games. Not only is there a graphical improvement, being on the PS3, but it gives a solid conclusion to the storyline. God of War III brings everything to the table in just the right portions... Action, Platforming, Puzzle solving, blood and violence, Greek mythology! ... The game is an amazing experience that will keep you pumped the entire time. There is almost no real faults to mention about this title other than some bad camera angles, but no game is perfect.
Kratos storms onto the PS3 and deals a devastating blow to the Gods of Olympus... Gameplay, storyline, graphics it is all here and in perfect balance. A must play title!
