We've trekked Egyptian tombs together, destroyed cult leader's and obtained countless treasures through the years, yet from the time we opened that first Jewel case, and read the iconic back story - we always knew something about Croft's past. There had been an airplane accident somewhere in there. While the story on that crash has taken many different incarnations, and additions it was not until the WB franchised films added in the element of Lara's past connection with R.H. Croft (father) --- and her quest to avenge the disappearance of her mother (Tomb Raider Legend/Underworld) that we started to take an interest in who this character really is ... and what makes her tick.
2011, E3 convention - Square Enix releases a trailer / concept art for a reboot - and all I could think was "Oh, no .. what is this?" While the renders looked amazing, and the game play looked intense ! I was not sold on the idea. It was obvious that Croft went from a woman in her (imagined 30's) to a younger woman no older than 22 which lead me (the consumer) to feel that they had sold the character out to a younger generation. Flash forward to Spring 2013, and a few product release delays later -- and a Tomb Raider "Survivor" was born ... reborn.
"Tomb Raider" is a huge departure from the previous re installments made by Crystal Dynamics and was needed for the storyline that finally uncovers in extreme detail the "airplane crash on a remote island" that lunged Lara Croft's back story into who she would become in all previous games. This game is a prequel to all previous installments to the series and it provides an in depth and often disturbing look into what happened on that island in Lara's youth.
Game play opens with Lara hanging upside down in some remote torture cave and will take some getting used to. All controls are scenario based throughout the gaming experience. So when we see Lara hanging, surrounded by dead bodies in a candle tomb - the only option is to swing your way out of it with your rotation pad. The controls throughout the game work in a way that feel very much like a departure from all previous Tomb Raider games in that Lara now has to maneuver through traps, and shoot off enemies while in compromised positions.
This game definitely unfolds itself in a way that will empower your inner "warrior". Lara begins a "victim" of sorts, controlled by her circumstances and surroundings, and quickly she realizes that in order to live -- she must defend herself and do whatever it takes to make her way off of the doomed island. Held to the island, by supernatural causes - Lara's experience from young girl to "Tomb Raider" is definitely enjoyable.
If you are expecting "easy" "familiar" gaming, then STOP ! because this reboot does not work like any other Tomb Raider games. Camera control and hand control work together to create a cinematic / realistic experience for the gamer. Graphics and rendering are at times so realistic, you'll forget who the previous Lara was, and may feel frustrated that she can no longer just walk into a room and shoot at her enemies with perfect aim ... behold a new shooting system where every "point and shoot" is hand coordinated by the game player and Lara has to learn, hoan and build upon her abilities in order to redeem faster aim and ween off her enemies with ease.
It is with this in mind that I was skeptical of gaming experience, because I often felt that Lara would "fall, get caught and slashed by an enemy, drown, get sliced by a tree" and more, so often that I was sometimes begging "BRING BACK MY OLD LARA !!!" AND YET -- by the end of the game, through Lara's journey and accomplishments, I concluded that the new Lara Croft is indeed ... NOT to be messed with and we get a hint of why she became the unstoppable heroine we know and love throughout the previous series.
Another notable departure from the previous gaming series is the use of "profanity" in this game - - which brings an amount of adult realism to the video game, and also tags the title with an "MA" sticker. There are themes of abuse, torture and more that may not be suitable or preferred by gamers who desire an "indianna jones" style experience (as previously loved). Lara's as close to human now as the developer's could create her - and she's not going to change back anytime soon according to press releases by Crystal Dynamics.
Voice actress Camilla Luddington provides "realness" to Lara's young appearance, but at times drove me insane with her moany / sensual timbre and is the ONLY aspect to the reboot that I question. I don't like how fatigued and "drunk" she sounded through most of the game. She sounds a lot like Kelly Osbourne if you ask me - and its not "bad" but its also not "Lara". I'd have much preferred an actress with a solid tone that still created that vulnerability and strength we need in order to "stand" listening to a character's voice.
Skeptics aside for a few minor changes, and Crystal / Square created a VERY different kind of gaming experience, one that will develop the gamer as he or she plays through each scenario to get Lara off that bloody island !. "A survivor is Born" truly describes the experience Lara faces when hulled into the face of human fear ... and she has to learn HOW to face that fear. So if you're into action, and you're into kicking @$$ in a new light under the skin of Lara Croft - this is a game that will not only inspire you, but will leave you curious to how the future concepts of the reboot will tie into the past concepts of fearless, agile and unstoppable heroine.
For starters, the game has beautiful graphics. The environment around you along with the lighting do a great job of making you feel like Lara is really stranded in an island. The cinematography pushes the game to the next level by creating great shots that make the action move along. Lara's outfit changes as the game progresses, which is great because you do not want to have a pretty looking Lara walk around throughout the whole game like nothing has happened despite falling, getting shot, etc.
The sound is great. It continues to move the action. The soundtrack is pretty good too, especially Lara's song.
I give HUGE KUDOS to Crystal Dynamics for revamping Lara. She no longer has to show off her "assets" to prove she can get someone's attention. Her origin story is nicely done. You can see the change from a young adult uncertain about some of her abilities to a more mature woman ready to do anything to survive. This is what makes this new Lara compelling. She is forced to grow up, and she becomes a great female lead without having to show off her body like the past Laras did. I honestly like this Lara better. The past Laras were good...I cannot discredit them, but this new Lara proves that there's strength and beauty in using your head and...guns hahaha without having to be overly sexualized. The voice acting for Lara is very well done as well.
The story is great and suits the whole idea of Tomb Raider. Also, exploring is great...what kind of game would this be if you could not raid tombs? lol I thoroughly enjoyed the little puzzles to get from point a to b and discover new tombs.
My only pet peeve was that quick time events were used a bit...not as bad as Resident evil 5 or 6. So, it didn't become overwhelming, but I hope that they do not overdo it in a sequel.
Overall, this game is amazing. It truly is an action/adventure game unlike other games that claim that combo. The new Lara is a good heroine with great qualities and a good origin story. Congrats again to Crystal Dynamics for the choices that they made, and I hope Square Enix continues to support this franchise in this current path. Would love to see what else they have in store for a potential sequel!
